Here's our list of the top ten favorites places for Visitor's to the Tampa Bay area. These are all places that we go to as locals and always have a good time. In addition to the Planet Visitor's Guide list, we also have a list of places for locals to "escape" at the following page: Planet Escapes

1. Canoe the Hillsborough River
Image

Probably the Best Kept Secret in Tampa Bay. There are a handful of places to rent a canoe but the one we use is Canoe Escape. Take the two hour leisurely paddling trip and you'll see an amazing array of alligators, birds, turtles, and amazing plant life and landscapes. The river runs very slowly so this isn't strenuous. Plan on the whole adventure taking 3 1/2 hours from the time you park at Canoe Escape to the time you get dropped back off at your car. There is a lot of tree canopy so sunscreen is recommended but not critical. If you go when sun is out, gators will be on the shoreline. They won't bother you if you don't bother them.

2. Eat at Bern's Steakhouse
Image

Bern's is a dining event that serves locals as well as tourists. The steakhouse has so many quirks and fun features that it is a guarantee that you'll walk away pleased to have gone. Bern's can be surprisingly inexpensive if you follow the normal course of a Bern's evening. Prepare to take your time.

There are five things you simply must do while at Bern's. The first is to find a bottle of wine that is inexpensive but was born at the time that you were. The second is to get to know your waiter or waitress and get the full skinny on what makes the place tick - all have been on Bern's farm as part of the job requirement. The third is to enjoy the vegetables and little side items that are put on your plate - all are made from scratch and have a story that comes along with them. The fourth is to take the kitchen tour when offered at the end of your dinner. Finally, the dessert room is absolutely over the top and is unlike anything you've ever seen. Steaks are nothing to get a wow over though - great aged beef but no seasoning as this will detract from the wine. Plenty of choices on the menu. You'll not walk away hungry or disappointed. Prepare to spend two or three hours at dinner including the dessert room.

The best way to tackle Bern's extensive menu is to take the advice of their waiters and sommelier. Our favorite way to enjoy Bern's is to stick with a price range of $30 per bottle of wine (or choose an older vintages by the glass), order a tableside Caesar Salad with the Steak Tartar. Don't miss the onion rings.

3. Go to Dali Museum
Image

The Dali Museum is the world's finest collection of Dali paintings outside of Europe and has a diverse collection that spans all periods of Dali's works. Dali is a pretty complex and sophisticated artist and making sure you are there for one of the docent led trips is a must.

4. Frank Lloyd Wright in Lakeland
Image

The campus of Florida Southern in Lakeland, Florida is home to the largest single site collection Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the world. There are some really amazing spaces within the buildings and the stories of Wright with his students is well worth the trip. This was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's last projects before he died with the final building getting completed in late 1950s.

5. Sarasota: Ringling Museum

The Ringling Mueseum is a must see for both the art and the beautiful property in Sarasota. This was originally the home of John Ringling, one of the founders of the circus that bears his name. The art collection includes works by Peter Paul Rubens, Velàzquez, Poussin, van Dyck and other Baroque masters. It also includes rare antiquities from Cyprus.

6. Tampa Historical Architecture
Image

Florida and the Tampa Bay area were really bustling at the turn of the century in the 1900s. The US invasion of Cuba in 1898 (wikipedia page here) had Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in Tampa and the cigar business was bustling. The center of Cuban and immigrant culture was in Ybor City and luxury building started when the railroad got to town. Henry Plant built the railroad that connected Tampa and Pinellas County to allow the trains from New York and the East Coast of Florida to have another destination other than South Florida and the Keys.

As a result, we have two extraordinary hotels that are worth visiting. One is still a hotel - the Belleview Biltmore and the other now houses the University of Tampa. The Biltmore offers tours and is a fun couple of hours that will take you back in time. wikipedia page on Belleview Biltmore

If you head over to Ybor City, there are two great examples of the social clubs that the immigrants from Spain, Cuba, Italy, Germany and other parts of Europe. These clubs provided health care, access to theater, and big social events on the weekend. The two finest examples of these clubs are the Centro Asturiano and Italian Club. Both are used to tourists making visits or walking the halls. If the doors are open in these places, just walk in and lead a self-guided tour. You'll get the flavor.

7. Picnic at Fort DeSoto Park
Image

The most beautiful beach in the Tampa Bay area. Trip Advisor named it the best beach in American for 2009.

8. Visit the Florida Aquarium
Image

The Florida Aquarium is a pretty cool venue. It gets old after going there about a dozen times but the aquarium does an outstanding job of showing a wide array of animal and sea life. Great Otter exhibit and wonderful large tank with all kinds of coral, tropical fish. The museum stays true to its Florida roots so you get a great sense of how the Florida aquifer works and how Florida water and Gulf of Mexico fit together in one ecosystem.

9. Busch Gardens Roller Coasters
Image

Busch Gardens has gotten extremely over-priced for its day rate in the past few years but offers a great value card to Florida visitors and to those in a position to come back 3-4 times. Nevertheless, it is still a great time and will fill up a big day at the park. The neat thing about Busch Gardens is that is offers some of the world's finest roller coasters of all stripes and sizes, but also an incredible zoo with opportunities to get very up close views of giraffes, elephants, apes, etc. (if you love zoos, also look at the Lowry Park Zoo? in Tampa which has been winning awards as one of the best small zoos in the US). There are also a wide variety of shows that are well done that can give you an opportunity to rest your feet.

10. Cuban Food at La Teresita
Image

Tampa has a rich history of Cuban culture going back into the 1800s. While most people think of Miami as the US bridge to Cuba, Tampa is the real gateway to Cuba and has been importing Cuban tobacco leaf for cigars up until the embargo of the late 1950s and early 1960s changed the relationship.

As a result of this we have a lot of great Cuban restaurants. The most famous of these is the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City which serves a good high end cuisine. We think the better Cuban is along over in West Tampa (near the Buccaneers Stadium) on Columbus Drive that is known to locals as "Boliche Boulevard" after the Cuban dish Boliche.

The best Cuban restaurant to get you started is a bit of a dive is La Teresita. Service is spotty at best but food is great. There are two sides to the restaurant - one with fixed stools and countertops and the "fine dining" side. The countertop side is favored by the older West Tampa residents who gather to discuss today's political news and the other side is for gringos who want to sit and be waited on. Either is good but stools get a little hard after a while.

Cuban cuisines doesn't really encompass vegetables so you pick a meat and two sides. Salads aren't a specialty either so don't waste your time. The three house specialties are, in this order: (1) Roast Pork (to die for); (2) Boliche and if it is on the list that day (3) Flank Steak. Pick one of the soups as your side: black beans, garbanzo bean soup or for a special treat pick the Caldo Gallego (collard green soup) and you can't go wrong. You're third "vegetable" should either be yellow rice if your hungry or friend plantains (cuban bananas). Order Cuban Coffee 1/2 expresso and 1/2 milk and you'll have a treat.

If you are adventurous and want to try more Cuban restaurants along Boliche Blvd, we'd also recommend Arco Iris?, Lincoln Restaurant?, and West Tampa Sandwich Shop? for a good Cuban sandwich.

Top Ten Restaurants

Image

1. Mise En Place
2. Cafe Dufrain
3. Bern's Steakhouse
4. Cafe Ponte
5. Red Mesa
6. Bamboozle
7. Yummy House
8. Osteria Natalina
9. Guppy's on the Beach
10.La Teresita
Restaurants are traditionally one of the riskiest businesses in this country. Even if the place opens with great fanfare and reviews, inherent fickleness in the American psyche can kill it in the following six months. I once worked for an incredibly talented chef/owner — here in Tampa — who advised me never to open my own place. "It's 24/7, Taylor. Don't forget that." The advice shaped my future, but he still owns and operates a restaurant, so he must thrive on the pressure.

And so must the owners of this list of ten Tampa Bay restaurants who have passed the brutal test of customer tastes, even during a recession. My favorites, in no particular order 'cept they are all exceptionally good. Think I missed the mark? Tell me in the comments what your Top Ten are.

1. Mise en Place
In business for over 20 years, MaryAnn Ferenc and Marty Blitz own this hip, urban food center in downtown Tampa . Humble and ohso creative, Chef Marty has been heralded across the country and especially in his hometown. We're happy he's at the Manhattan-worthy Mise (local slang, pronounced "MEEZ"), practicing his brand of nouveau cuisine that always over delivers. Menu changes every Tuesday but Chef Marty keeps some favorites on the menu, like Wild Mushroom Salad and Flatbread pizzas. To get the full meal deal, order the Get Blitzed Prix Fixe and enjoy the beauty of his bountiful talent. Wines by the glass also changes regularly, so be sure to check those out.

2. Cafe Dufrain
Cafe Dufrain went through several lives before succeeding in its current format. And succeed they do. Walk from downtown, arrive by boat or drive over to Harbour Island, but get there somehow to one of the only waterfront restaurants in our town. The food is inspired, creative and on the cutting edge of cuisine. You'll think you're upscale in The City. Not Tampa, the big city up north. Cafe Dufrain's menu changes frequently but they excel at seafood. 75 percent of the menu contains items that are sustainable and/or certified organic.

3. Bern's Steakhouse
One of Tampa's most famous landmark's, where foodies flock from all corners of the earth to bask in its bordello-esque glory. Impeccable service, aged steaks and if you're into wine, you could grow old studying the book-like wine list. Don't miss the tableside Caesar salad, fresh oysters, onion rings and the aged beef.

4. Cafe Ponte
After spending several years cooking in France, Chris Ponte was welcomed several years ago when he came to roost in Clearwater. His eponymous-named restaurant, Café Ponte, has been lighting up the culinary scene with his French-infused cuisine ever since. It's also a place to star gaze, since luminaries like Wolfgang Puck and Thomas Keller stop by when they're in town. Menu changes frequently but look for Wild Mushroom Bisque, Yukon Gold Flatbread Pizza, Maple Leaf Duck Breast and Chilean Sea Bass.

5. Red Mesa
The name might sound like traditional, boring Mexican, but you're in for a surprise. Chef Chris Fernandez puts a latin
and southwestern spin on the traditional dishes of Mexico (where he grew up), lights them up with lotsa spice and invites you in. Go early, there's a wait almost every night. Best items: Sangria, Duck Enchiladas, Roast Pork Verde, and Espresso Rubbed Steak. The owners recently opened Red Mesa Cantina in downtown St. Pete, a casual, more modern look at Mexican fare, in downtown St. Petersburg. They serve some of the best tacos around.

6. Bamboozle Cafe
People who've never been here might scratch their head about this entry... but they've never been there. Tucked into a little storefront in downtown Tampa lies this casual, über hip, family-owned Vietnamese café that serves up fresh, fresh, fresh food like my personal favorite, Sesame Noodles. Clear noodles bathed in a heavenly sesame, garlic and soy broth. Toss in some chicken and you’ve got light, quick, low calorie meal. Other must-trys are the Pho and the Sake Mojito.

7. Yummy House

Authentic Chinese, the way momma intended (well, not my momma, but somebody's momma). The atmosphere is nothing to gush over and the service is just OK but if you crave something more inventive and Chinese than Moo Gai Pan or General Tso's Chicken, this is your destination. I dream of their salt and pepper calamari. Just the right amount of cracked black pepper, salt and jalapeño make this little traditional dish a seminal favorite for foodies. They also allow you to bring your own wine (I suggest Riesling) for no corkage fee.

8. Osteria Natalina
Bar none the best Italian food in the Tampa Bay area, although Villa Gallace in Indian Rocks Beach is a VERY close second. Osteria doesn't, however, feel like you're walking into a Denny's. It oozes authenticity simply because it is. Chef Spartaco Giolito hails from the east coast of Italy in Rimini and his Mom visits a few times a year to help him. A
real family affair with incredible gnocchi, lobster ravioli and... well everything is superb.

9. Guppy's on the Beach
Good chance I'll get some grumbles about this but Guppy's on Indian Rocks Beach rocks the best seafood in the Bay (Sorry, but the last few times I've been to Salt Rock Grill, it wasn't keeping up). This quintessential beach dive just got a massive makeover (and a 'lil lift in prices) so some of its charm was lifted. But the food and the friendly service still rocks. The daily specials are often my favorite part but seek out the fish spread. They also make music with scallops everytime.

10. La Teresita
A restaurant top ten list for Tampa bay isn't complete without a Cuban entry and, frankly, isn't right without mentioning La Teresita. I imagine fistfights have broken out over "who makes the best Cuban food in town?" But guaranteed the original West Tampa location of Teresita is part of that fight. Their sometimes low health inspection reports might hurt them initially but people keep going back for the under $10 Ropa Vieja, Spanish Bean Soup and Roast Pork with Yellow Rice. Oh, and don't forget the sweet, glorious Platanos. Oh what fun at 3am on a Saturday night, when customers break out their guitars and sing.

Feature: Youth Sailing

Image

1. St Pete Sailing Center
2. Davis Island Yacht Club
3. Sarasota Sailing Squadron
4. Clearwater Sailing Center
5. Treasure Island Yacht Club

In order, as I see it, 1 to 5:

And honorable mention to USF St Pete, perennially ranked in the top 10 colleges for sailing in intercollegiate competition, with head coach Allison Jolly, the first US woman to win a women’s sailing gold medal.

Also, Tampa Bay is home to Ed Baird, most recent winning America’s Cup skipper on board Alinghi, with two kids in the youth circuit.

Quite a bit more sailing history in the bay and particularly among youth sailors, but we can save that for later.

- John Pinholster

Non Advanced Search or Natural Search

The documents are returned sorted on relevance depending on order, proximity, frequency of terms.

Advanced Search or Boolean Search

Default search behavior

By default, all search terms are optional. It behaves like an OR logic. Objects that contain the more terms are rated higher in the results and will appear first in their type. For example, wiki forum will find:

 • objects that include both terms
 • objects that include the term wiki
 • objects that include the term forum

Requiring terms

Add a plus sign ( + ) before a term to indicate that the term must appear in results. Example: +wiki forum will find objects containing at least wiki. Objects with both terms and many occurences of the terms will appear first.

Excluding terms

Add a minus sign ( - ) before a term to indicate that the term must not appear in the results. To reduce a term's value without completely excluding it, use a tilde. Example: -wiki forum will find objects that do not contain wiki but contain forum

Grouping terms

Use parenthesis ( ) to group terms into subexpressions. Example: +wiki +(forum blog) will find objects that contain wiki and forum or that contain wiki and blog in any order.

Finding phrases

Use double quotes ( " " ) around a phrase to find terms in the exact order, exactly as typed. Example: "Alex Bell" will not find Bell Alex or Alex G. Bell.

Using wildcards

Add an asterisk ( * ) after a term to find objects that include the root word. For example, run* will find:

 • objects that include the term run
 • objects that include the term runner
 • objects that include the term running

Reducing a term's value

Add a tilde ( ~ ) before a term to reduce its value indicate to the ranking of the results. Objects that contain the term will appear lower than other objects (unlike the minus sign which will completely exclude a term). Example: +wiki ~forum will rate an object with only wiki higher that an object with wiki and forum.

Changing relevance value

Add a less than ( < ) or greater than ( > ) sign before a term to change the term's contribution to the overall relevance value assigned to a object. Example: +wiki +(>forum < blog) will find objects that contain wiki and forum or wiki and blog in any order. wiki forum will be rated higher.
